The overall objective of Age-It is\u00a0to provoke a quantum leap in Italy\u2019s contribution to research on ageing, making it a leader in research as well as in strategic European and global value chains<\/strong>. Applying a\u00a0holistic, interdisciplinary<\/strong>, and\u00a0problem-solving approach<\/strong>, Age-It overcomes the fragmentation of different perspectives on ageing, involving a critical mass of partners including research and educational institutions, care providers and civil society associations, businesses and industries.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Age-It identifies the\u00a0ten most relevant challenges<\/strong>\u00a0to allow individuals to age well and to build an inclusive ageing society as the foundation of the Spoke infrastructure, which consists of\u00a0six thematic (horizontal) challenges and four cross-integration (vertical) challenges<\/strong>.<\/p>

  • The project originates from the demographic megatrends that are shaping our society: the first challenge is thus the understanding of the\u00a0micro and macro demographic drivers of ageing<\/strong>adopting a\u00a0Data Science approach<\/strong>\u00a0to decision-making (#1).<\/li>
  • Addressing and facing population ageing necessitates a focus on pivotal thematic challenges: improving our understanding of the\u00a0biology of ageing<\/strong>(#2), of the\u00a0clinical and functional factors related to multimorbidity<\/strong>\u00a0(#3), of the life course\u00a0trajectories of active and healthy ageing\u00a0<\/strong>(#4), and of the\u00a0world of care provision<\/strong>\u00a0(#5). These challenges are intertwined with the\u00a0Silver Economy<\/strong>\u00a0(i.e., work, participation and welfare at older ages, but also new consumption and activity models) (#6) and with the\u00a0political and cultural dimensions of an ageing society\u00a0<\/strong>(#7).<\/li>

    Age-It stems from\u00a0three cross-cutting concepts\u00a0to address ageing, which necessitate a holistic, interdisciplinary, and problem-solving approach. This programme acknowledges\u00a0the dynamic nature of ageing through a holistic view by adopting a life course approach\u00a0at the individual and family level and for society as a whole. Three life course principles in particular provide the foundation of our holistic approach:<\/span><\/span><\/p>

    • cumulative contingencies\u00a0(previous experiences shape a person\u2019s current status);\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/li>

    • linked lives\u00a0(events in one domain of a person\u2019s life influence all of their other domains);\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/li>

    • historical time period (the period in which individuals live moderates the timing and sequencing of key life course transitions).<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul>
